Predictions at Punxsutawney

Spring is just around the corner, or so says Punxsutawney Phil who did not see his shadow during today’s Groundhog Day festivities. While we may not understand the significance of an early spring in Hawaii, it’s music to the ears of the millions of fed-up, blizzard-prone people on the Mainland. Imagine if you had to live this day over again, just as in the 1993 movie “Groundhog Day.” With record snowfalls, freezing temperatures or just your seemingly mundane, everyday life, today may not be your first choice to start again.

For those of you who have never seen the movie, Bill Murray plays an egocentric weatherman who is forced to cover the annual Groundhog Day event despite his hatred for the whole thing. However he finds himself repeating the same day over and over again while still maintaining the memories from each day. First he takes advantage of the situation, but then begins to reexamine his life and priorities.

What would it take for you to question how you live? A near-death experience? Hitting the jackpot in Vegas? Being stuck in a rut as Murray’s character was in the movie? What would you do if you could live the day over? Would you do anything differently? While we may not be able to have a do-over day, we can transform our lives by committing to a change from here on out.

The accuracy of Punxsutawney Phil is up for debate, but Groundhog Day has become a yearly tradition in our society. People may not believe wholeheartedly in the prediction, but it gives them hope about the future with the close of a snowy winter and the start of something new. Now if we could only find something to predict the end to this icy economy.
